PEPSI CENTER HISTORY
Since opening October 1, 1999, with a sold-out performance by Celine Dion, Pepsi Center has hosted a wide variety of events including hockey and basketball games, musical acts, and family events.
Home of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, and NLL’s Colorado Mammoth, Pepsi Center seats 19,099 for basketball games and 18,007 for hockey and lacrosse games.
Pepsi Center is one of the very few sports venues in North America that provides a separate practice facility for its team. Additional features of Pepsi Center include Pepsi Vision, a 70,000 lbs Daktronics-manufactured center-hung scoreboard that rivals the largest of its kind in the world. A new state-of-the-art projection system transforms the Pepsi Center floor into a giant 4K resolution screen during team events and is a must-see feature.
ABOUT THE TEAMS
The Avalanche relocated to Denver from Quebec City during the summer of 1995. They became the first NHL team to win the Stanley Cup in the season following a relocation. In 2001, the Avalanche won their second and most recent championship. They have won nine division titles (including their first eight in a row in Denver, the longest such streak in NHL history) and qualified for the playoffs in each of their first ten seasons in Denver; this streak ended in 2007.
The Mammoth have played box lacrosse in the National Lacrosse League at Pepsi Center since the 2003 season. In 2004 and from 2006 to 2008, the Mammoth lead the league in attendance. 2006 was the first year in the 20-year history of the NLL that the league had an attendance of more than one million fans in one season, and the Mammoth had the honor of hosting fan number one million. In the 2006 season, the Mammoth won the Champion's Cup by a score of 16-9.
The Nuggets were founded as the Denver Larks in 1967, but changed their name to Rockets before the first season. They became the Nuggets in 1974. The team has had some periods of success, qualifying for the ABA Playoffs for all seasons from 1967 to the 1976 ABA playoffs where it lost in the finals. The team joined the NBA in 1976 and qualified for the NBA playoffs in nine consecutive seasons in the 1980's and ten consecutive seasons from 2004 to 2013. However, it has not made an appearance in a championship round since its last year in the ABA.
