Meet Our Art Director, Matt Menke
MEET DUST CITY DESIGNS ART DIRECTOR, MATT MENKE
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT DUST CITY DESIGNS?
Too many to name! I have been with the company since it's inception and my main roles are working as the Art Director, Operations Manager, and Website Lead. While working in my role as Art Director I am in charge of keeping our brand fresh and ever changing. I also manage different artists, in house and contracted, to develop over 2500 stock designs along with new designs every day for our customers!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND
I studied Graphic Design and received a BA in it. I’ve always had a strong interest and art and design and have long dreamed of being able to build a brand from scratch.
WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST CREATIVE INFLUENCES?
My biggest creative influences are generally not people, but more environments. Things such as space, galaxies, planets, and nature tend to inspire me the most.
IS THERE AN ELEMENT OF ART YOU ENJOY WORKING WITH MOST?
My favorite part of art is the polarizing nature of it. Good art will always evoke some sort of response, whether it’s positive or negative.
WHAT IS YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ARTIST TOOL THAT YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT?
My computer! Having grown up in the age of Adobe, the programs seem like a natural extension as an artist. That said, I still love to draw by hand every now and then.
TELL US ABOUT A DESIGN YOU'VE MADE FOR DUST CITY DESIGNS THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF
Sadly my days of actually creating designs at Dust City are pretty far passed, but I do have a number of projects that I’ve worked on that made me proud. Some of my favorite projects include the various National Parks and creating designs of their landmarks.
DO YOU HAVE AN OFFICE NICKNAME? WHAT IS IT AND WHY?
People at the shop tend to call me Cat Lady. I think it's because I like cats.
IF YOU COULD BE ANY ANIMAL, WHAT ANIMAL WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?
Obviously a cat. This needs no explanation
IF YOU COULD VISIT ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD YOU'VE NEVER BEEN, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?
I'd love to visit along the Northern Pole to see the auroras. That's something I've always wanted to see in my lifetime!
ON A MORE SERIOUS NOTE...WOULD YOU RATHER FIGHT ONE HORSE-SIZED DUCK, OR 100 DUCK-SIZED HORSES?
100 duck sized horses. Just stomp on them.
